This emergency contraceptive pill contains 1.5 mg of levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestogen that prevents pregnancy primarily by inhibiting ovulation and possibly by preventing fertilisation or implantation. It is most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex, ideally within 12 hours, and no later than 72 hours (3 days). The tablet is suitable for women of childbearing age, including adolescents, and is available without a prescription in the UK.
